The rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles that provide strength, stability, and support to the shoulder joint and upper arm bone during motion. This muscle group enables the shoulder to rotate freely and lift the arm upward.

Rotator cuff injuries can occur for many reasons. The risk of having a rotator cuff injury increases with age. Over time, the tendons and muscles may become torn or damaged, leading to pain, weakness, and inflammation of the upper arm. When traditional non-surgical measures fail to relieve the pain, rotator cuff surgery may be considered.

Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery

An arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure to minimize downtime and ensure patient safety. Dr. Goldberg uses a minimally invasive approach to repair any torn rotator cuff tendons. This allows patients to experience less pain than traditional open surgery to repair a rotator cuff tear and it does not require an overnight hospital stay.

Rotator Cuff Surgery Recovery

Recovery after surgery often depends on the size and severity of the torn tendon and the patient’s overall health. Participation in physical therapy is important to help strengthen and restore the shoulder’s mobility and heal the rotator cuff tendon. Dr. Goldberg’s practice instructs patients to perform specific exercises the first day after surgery and to start a physical therapy protocol within a week of their operation. Implementing a rehab protocol enables patients to return more quickly to their daily activities no longer suffering from rotator cuff tears.
